Caring for Parakeets - Caring for Parakeets Questions

Caring for Parakeets - Caring for Parakeets Questions

Question #1:

Parakeet died, wonder why?

My parakeet dropped dead. I have a feeling I know why.
It was a decently old pet, 8 years if I remember correctly.
Mice had started coming in to the house for the winter and it liked to eat the seeds/shells.
I set up a mouse trap about 3 feet from the cage (on the ground). Like any other trap, it caught something within the first 20 minuets. Could the snap from the trap have caused too much stress on my parakeet resulting in its death? Its the only logical reason I have, for care was given to the greatest extent.

Question #2:

Info on taking care of parakeets?

Hey, I'm thinking about getting a parakeet. I've always wanted one. I just wanted some info on maintenance and whatnot. Food, grooming, cleaning, noise control, training, etc.
High maintenance isn't an issue either. Recently my special needs (he was abused, had three legs, one eye, and had cataracts in his good eye) Pomeranian died. I had him for years and loved him dearly. He was very high maintenance, especially since he never allowed anyone but me to touch him. I had do all of his grooming and etc myself.
Anything you can tell me about owning a parakeet before I commit to buying one would be great. Thank you :)

Question #3:

Can I train a cat to get along with my birds?

Long story short, I have to take care of this kitten for while. I have parakeets and worry for them, since the cat is still a baby, can I train it get along with my parakeets without a problem?

Question #4:

First time parakeet owner, avian vet?

So I have a few questions pertaining to my new parakeet who I have had for 3 days and can already be let out of his cage, petted, and is still learning the step up trick. Anyways, this is my first actual pet that my dad finally allowed me to have and I want to be the best owner possible. I heard birds need check ups, especially when you first get them. I got mine from petco (-_- I know....)

Is a check up really needed (because I don't want to make my dad waste money and it took a lot to convince him)? And do avian vets care enough for an animal so small? I've already found one in an animal hospital but I feel they're more looking for birds like parrots. My parakeet is so tiny I feel like they won't care.

Please no bad comments. I really want him/her to live as long as possible. Thank you!

P.s. any tips would be much appreciated!

Question #5:

Help! Found an injured parakeet, how can I take care of him/her?

Poor little fella, my brother found an injured and wet parakeet on the street this morning and brought it home. We have lovebirds as well so we gave the parakeet lovebird food.
I think this bird has stopped bleeding, because there seems to be no blood on the tissues lining the bottom of the cage we put him/her in, but it keeps pulling its own feathers out. It's the saddest thing.
For now, We've put in a mirror in the cage, hoping it will make it less lonely and I guess that seems to have worked for now. The situations not dire anymore

But what can we do to help this poor parakeet? And help it heal? It can fly but its limping on one foot. (Can't take it to a vet, called 10 vets around the area. Only 3 help birds and its going to cost 130 at least) Would you recommend buying this bird a parakeet companion or waiting till its fully healed? And from here, how can I get this parakeet to trust us after all its been through? Please help, I really want this poor guy to live.
Also, I just discovered bird can get mites. This bird I've decided to name Yoda was found in the street, and it has a few dots on its forehead (don't know if its natural markings) and its currently night but the bird is restless. Regardless of whether its mites, can I still go buy mite/lice spray and spray it on this bird? I have a terrible phobia of licelike bugs and I can't even sleep after discovering parakeets can have it. But I don't want to injure the bird even more. What should I do?

Question #6:

How to take care of a parakeet?

So my dads birthday is coming up and he has always been very fond of birds. I really want to surprise him with a bird so I am just wondering how to take care of one. Like what do they eat, what tricks can they do, is it easy to take care of it, are they fine with other animals, and what supplies do they need? If you can give me some good websites that would be great! I have a dog but he is not very wild so I honestly don't think he would eat the bird or really try to harm it but I don't want the bird to bite him. And are they really noisy? Sorry if I am asking for too much

Question #7:

Should I buy these Cockatiels? a few months old and not Hand raised/Bottle fed?

I'm looking at buying a Bird, and I want a Cockatiel so I called around and I found a place that sold them. They were 45 dollars and a few months old. They were not tamed or hand raised... So how hard would it be to tame them if even possible? I'm completely and entirely new to birds. So any advice would be nice :)

Also I'm buying a Parakeet to kind of get use to bird care, and going to pass it on to my mom once I'm sure I'm ready for a Cockatiel ( I live with my mom, I'm 14)
Sir I've spent the past week everyday reading up on Parakeets, I've done my research.

Question #8:

Is a parakeet easy to take care of?

I'm looking for a bird. I've never had one before. I heard that the parakeets we cheap.
$15 is pretty cheap.

Question #9:

Parakeet pet questions?

So I'm 13 yr old girl and right now my family (mom n grandparents) only have a cat. We've had other pets before like a turtle for me and my grandpa when I was young but we had to get rid of it. I really want a pet and I'll tell you the truth not a very very high mantinence one but still one that you can interact with on a daily basis. I came up with a parakeet and did my research and they seem like pretty good house pets, fun, easy to take care of, and all at a low cost. But what's important is that my parents understand this. Im very good when it comes to responsiblity and im not just saying that. Yes i do have a life so yeh ill be out of the house sometimes but not allll the time. So with that here are some questions about I'd like to know.
How much will I have to pay when I go to buy it (like cage, food, toys ect)
How much after that a week..month..year
How many times a month do you clean it's cage
How often do you feed it
Can parakeets say small words
Which is best boy or girl and I only want one and I want it at a very young age
Is it true that they attach to one person
Do they make a mess
When do they sleep
At night will they make a lot of noise
Do you like parakeets
Are they messy birds
Is it true they only poop once a day (I hope this is true LOL)
That's it I'll probably think of more questions but for now if you could answer those to the best of your ability and please if you have any advice or stories of your own about your parakeets please add thanks!

Question #10:

Parakeet Question For A New Bird Owner?

I have two parakeets, and they' re cage mates. A family friend gave them to me because they could no longer care for them, and they gave me a bunch of stuff with the birds. And they also gave me this small, plastic bath tub, toy thing. I'm not sure what its for. Its a bath tub, with a small little mirror on the bottom. Do I put water into it, then put it into their cage so they can bathe in it?! Or .. do i just leave it empty??
- Thanks :-)

Question #11:

first time parakeet owner tips!!!?

i am going to be getting a new parakeet in 3 months and have some questions. first of all i already have a huge 6ft by 3ft cage so there will be plenty of room for him to play and i already have all the toys, food, and everything i need. here are my questions:

1- are parakeets loud and can you train them to be quiet.

2- can i train my bird to fly (on a leash of course) to a branch and back?

3- how much care do parakeets need compared to chinchillas?

4- what are the pros of parakeets and what are the cons

5- how much money will i spend on food for my bird each month/week?

Question #12:

Should I get a leopard gecko or a parakeet?

I'd like to know which one to get. I have a couple of requirements and questions, and PROFESSIONAL help would be much appreciated! I'd prefer to not have any 2 sentence answers, and I don't want answers from people who don't know what they're talking about. (:

So, I'd be keeping which ever one in my bedroom, which is luke-warm, or my coffee room, which is very cold in the winter, and a little cold in the summer.
I don't want a huge cage, so would either mind having a medium sized cage? I'm only asking because my friend has a parakeet and her's has a huge cage.
I don't want it to smell, because I was in science a couple days ago when the bearded dragon pooped on our table. It smelled for about twenty minutes after that, so I don't want anything that will make either room smell like a toilet that can't flush.
Also, it needs to be easy to take care of. I have some understanding on the care of them, but I haven't taken care of one personally, so I wouldn't know whats it's like.
My friends parakeet likes to take his food and throw at the bottom of the cage. Do all parakeets do that, or is it just my friends?
Do either of them react better when with a companion? Like, would I have to get two parakeets to keep it happy, or would I be able to get a mirror to keep it entertained when I'm not taking him out? I would take either of them out often, anyways.

If anybody could answer these, or maybe give me some information on anything I forgot I would be very happy! I have until school ends to decide, so please take your time, whoever answers! ^^
Ooh! I just forgot to ask what the lifetime is for either of them when domesticated. If there's anything else I miss, I'll be sure to add it! (:

Question #13:

My bird just died... I need to know why?

I had a Parakeet we just called Pretty Bird. I got her when I was about 10. I'm 18 now so she was roughly around 8 years old. She was active, sang a lot, danced to music, and fended off her cage from the cats. And wouldn't let me put my hand in her cage either! lol She was a spunky little thing... but then 4 days ago we got three new Parakeets. I figured it would be nice to have some more pretty singing and to maybe keep Pretty Bird entertained for a while, but they're in different cages. (The reason Pretty Bird didn't have a mate was because she killed the male - at least I was TOLD he was a male - about a year after we got them.) About a day after we got the new birds I found Pretty Bird trying to lay an egg but it was bleeding REALLY bad and stuck inside her... An Avian Vet told us to help her get it out with warm water and to just gently pull it since there are no bird vets in the area. So we did and he said to keep her warm with a heat lamp since she lost so much blood. She seemed a little traumatized but was still eating and drinking on her own. She just slept a lot and stayed near the lamp all the time since that day... and wasn't herself anymore... it seemed to me she might've been depressed because we took her "baby" from her but I guess that wasn't it...

I went to take a shower today after checking on her and she seemed okay, then came back and found her dead on the cage floor... did something happen inside her that caused her to die? She was still pooping normally, so it wasn't being blocked. I'm devastated... I think what happened to her was she Prolapsed (I think that's the word) and the stories I've heard on the internet about Prolapsed birds aren't good.. hardly any make it. :'( Even with vet care.

Just wanting to see if anyone else has any other ideas...

Question #14:

Is my parakeets beak going to fall off?!?

We have no vet we can take it to where i'm from....So please don't suggest this...I know it sounds crazy, but can my parakeets beak fall off??? He is taken care of very well. He has plenty of food and vitamins and water...toys, treats...Hes a happy bird! Today I was feeding him some spray millet, when i realized something strange... The bottom portion of his beak was DETACHED from his head. Okay, so how to describe this is he has two parts of a beak. Top and bottom. Okay, now go to the bottom beak. Under the beak, it is literally not connected there. Its a HOLE. Its the color of his tongue, and it goes big small big small like hes BREATHING through it. he has nostrils to breathe from...so what the heck? I know this is not normal. I cannot take him to a vet as their are none for parakeets in our state. He seems fine, healthy. He doesn't notice. Please don't make jokes, i think he might die and its not what i need to hear right now. Please tell me why this might have happened, will his beak fall off, how to fix this, if it falls off will it grow back, and why the hole is moving strangely.

yes, I am very serious. again, dont use this for jokes i dont want him to die. even if you dont know just pray for him please? Thanks so much guys.
actually, the pics u guys are showing me isnt what i mean. He's a parakeet, they dont have that thing the parrot does. but see how the whole bottom is shaped like a tooth? where it goes back into his skin, is the hole, and you can see the end of the back of the beak.

BUt I see what u guys r saying

Question #15:

I have a few Green Cheek Conure questions...?

I'm considering getting a Green Cheeked Conure as a "pet" (I put air quotes because I consider them as feathery companions, not pets). I currently have a parakeet and am concerned about the two fighting. They will not be living in the same cage together but will live in the same house... How do I get them associated with each other so they aren't always trying to fight each other? Also, both of their wings will be clipped, but could I let them both out at the same time (I'm sort of worried about that)? If any one knows how to deal with introducing new birds, especially a Green Cheek Conure and a parakeet, please speak up!!!! If you could please give me some tips on this... That would be VERY helpful!!!! Also, I have not found any local breeders for the conure, and I REFUSE to get it from a pet store, would it be okay to ship it? I understand it puts a lot of stress on the bird, but it seems like it is my only option... I've been told that when they ship an animal, they take good care of it during the process. I need some answers, please.... Thank you!!!!!!

If you have any additional information that will be helpful and I should know, please include that in your answer.
Also, my parakeet is a male, so should I get a male or female Green Cheeked Conure? Im, interested in a weaned, young conure, so if you find any breeders, please tell me. My price range is from $125-$275.

Question #16:

I need help on parakeet (budgie) care.?

I know the basics, lots of time, clean food and water, warm climate, and baths, but I need a few more tips. Before some smart ass says something along the lines of "well you shouldn't have gotten one" i found it at a golf course when i went with my family. i'm currently looking for it's owner, but no one else in my family was able to take care of it, so i am. Poor little guy was freezing to death! Also, it is in need of a wing clipping so i can take it outside without worrying. It likes to be outside more than in. On average how much does a pet store charge to have it done? I don't trust myself to do it.

Question #17:

My Parakeet laid eggs... what do I do now?

She is kept with a male parakeet. I thought they were both boys until today. What are the chances that the eggs are fertile? Do I have to do anything or should I just let her take care of them? I've owned the male for 6 years and the female for just a couple months.
Any suggestions would be great.

Question #19:

Is a 5 yr old parakeet too old to teach new things too?

I have two parakeets I've had for 5 years (one male blue budgie and one female rare budgie). And I'm afraid their diet is not as healthy as it should be. They refuse to eat anything but seeds (the seed food forti-diet by kaytee),millet spray and the seeds off of treat sticks. I have tried multiple times to incorporate pellets slowly into their food, but they ignore the pellets and dig around for the seeds. They also ignore any fruits and veggies offered.
I realize that I should have been offering all of these things from the start, but thanks to the petsmart employees advice and myself being 11, I gave seeds.
So my birdies seem healthy enough, but I'd like to feed them more variety, is it still possible?

(they are taken very good care of, they have a huge clean cage which is always left open in my sisters closed (and birdyproof) bedroom so they can fly (as all birds are meant to do). They always have acess to fresh water in their birdie bath, and we play with them everyday.)
Any advice is appreciated:) especially from someone who has older birds and experience.
Thank you!:)

Question #20:

How can I convince my parents to let me have a budgie?

I am a very responsible person. I know everything there is to know about budgies. I created an account to share the knowledge of budgies I know. One problem- I can't share it in the real world. I don't have a budgie!!!! I made persuasive papers, a 4 page essay(completely full) A huge poster board full of information, budget plans, facts, how i plan on taking care of it, pictures, a drawing of were in my house I will put it, how I will train it, I got out my laptop and showed videos on youtube of how samrt they are, and a lot lot more. STILL NOTHING! They said "you still know my feelings" like, what is that supposed to mean?!!!!???!?!?! He told me why he didn't want one:responsibility. I told him how he wouldnt even have to lift a finger, and he said,"' .........'!!!! like what is wrong with "possibly get one" she said, " its up to your father". I am even going to be paying for EVERYTHING. Parakeets at petco only cost $12 so i have all the money. I told him that having the permission to have a parakeet would be my one and only birthday present. He said "....." Ugh I am soooo mad right now. I did all this work work and nothing. I don't know what his problem is and my b-day is coming up soon so I need a decision from him soon.HELP ME!!!
*like what is wrong with him? I asked my mom and she said"possibly get one" sorry for the typo. Oh yeah, she=my mom he=my dad
Oh and lisa, the food is not expensive, and your bird is probably just scared of you. DONT GO ALL CRAZY JUST BECAUSE YOUR BUDGIE DOESN'T LIKE YOU!!!
